Summary

A thrilling conclusion to an incredible series; this book was the perfect blend of Russian fairytales and a fraught political history, with a fierce protagonist and plenty of unlikely allies coming together for several truly epic final battles。 The action-packed plot took me on a breakneck journey, on the backs of magical horses and on midnight roads, and I loved every second spent in Rus’。 The bittersweet ending hit so hard, but it felt right - my heart is so full。

@sarah j maas Take Fucking Notes – this is how you write a romance between special human girl and extremely powerful immortal being, not whatever creepy rapey nonsense is going on in so many contemporary novels of this ilk。 (if you even have to put the romance in at all。 I'm a little annoyed it's here at all in this book, but also it was obvious that this is where it was going from the very first book so I really can't be too mad。 and she did a much much better job with it than I could have pred @sarah j maas Take Fucking Notes – this is how you write a romance between special human girl and extremely powerful immortal being, not whatever creepy rapey nonsense is going on in so many contemporary novels of this ilk。 (if you even have to put the romance in at all。 I'm a little annoyed it's here at all in this book, but also it was obvious that this is where it was going from the very first book so I really can't be too mad。 and she did a much much better job with it than I could have predicted)anyway this book was very good。 I thought arden did an excellent job balancing the historical and magical aspects of the story; the whole first half is just straight fantasy world and she totally could have ended it there, but instead we get a deep dive into russian politics and actual historical events, and it works! I wasn't sure it was going to, but she pulled it off really well。 and solovey my beloved! arden made me tear up twice – one when (spoilers!) he dies, and again when (double spoilers!) he came back to life。 。。。more

This was everything。 I loved it so much。 I don't even know what to say I'm too overwhelmed。 Beautiful, brutal, bittersweet。 This was such a great trilogy and this was an amazing last book。 I often feel a sense of emptiness at the end of a series, but right now I feel overflowing。 I cried I cheered I mourned I rejoiced。 So so SO good。 This was everything。 I loved it so much。 I don't even know what to say I'm too overwhelmed。 Beautiful, brutal, bittersweet。 This was such a great trilogy and this was an amazing last book。 I often feel a sense of emptiness at the end of a series, but right now I feel overflowing。 I cried I cheered I mourned I rejoiced。 So so SO good。 。。。more

I'm proud I finished the Winternight trilogy。 In my opinion, the third part wasn't as strong as the first two。 The story was a bit too crowded with epic happenings, therefore losing at least part of the fairy tale appeal that was so strongly present in the other books。 I think Arden completed the narrative nicely, I just didn't like it as much。In the epilogue, Arden explains that (view spoiler)[the ending point for Vasya's story was always supposed to be the batte of Kulikovo。 To me, this meant I'm proud I finished the Winternight trilogy。 In my opinion, the third part wasn't as strong as the first two。 The story was a bit too crowded with epic happenings, therefore losing at least part of the fairy tale appeal that was so strongly present in the other books。 I think Arden completed the narrative nicely, I just didn't like it as much。In the epilogue, Arden explains that (view spoiler)[the ending point for Vasya's story was always supposed to be the batte of Kulikovo。 To me, this meant withstanding even more depictions of cruelty and violence。 For the first time I also felt like Arden's mentions of femicide were a bit too much, especially as they didn't lead to any reflection on the part of our heroine。 (hide spoiler)]I still enjoyed reading the book a lot and all my criticism is subjective to me。 Arden's stylistic choices are sound, as always, and her characterizations of the mythical beings of Russia are interesting and entertaining。 。。。more

Brilliant finish to the series。 Loved the way it tied an actual battle between the Rus' and the Tartars into the story, including using the historical figures as part of the story。 Kudos to Arden for not belabouring this either, it felt so natural and I didn't realise that the battle did actually happen until I read the notes at the back of the book。 Brilliant finish to the series。 Loved the way it tied an actual battle between the Rus' and the Tartars into the story, including using the historical figures as part of the story。 Kudos to Arden for not belabouring this either, it felt so natural and I didn't realise that the battle did actually happen until I read the notes at the back of the book。 。。。more

Stupendo!

It’s always neat to look at a character’s development after finishing a series。 Vasya underwent an incredible transformation throughout the series and discovered her purpose。 The pace of this book was much better than the second, and it tied up almost all loose ends。 It was a fitting finale to the series。
